Janka Chart and Red Oak
A lot has been made of exotic floors and just how they can improve the look of your homes. These claims are well deserved but that doesn't mean you should overlook great flooring options that could literally be in your back yard. That's why I wanted to take a look at one of the most popular domestic tradewoods available today, Red Oak.
Using Janka chart to choose between 2 hardwood species
Now exotic floors are lauded for their exceptional hardness and high ranking on the Janka Hardness Scale. The Janka chart measures the hardness of a particular species of wood by measuring the force necessary to embed a steel ball halfway through a piece of wood. While this is a good rule of thumb when measuring the hardness of wood it doesn't mean that woods at the top of the scale are invincible. In fact, harder words are often more difficult to work with and install due to their tendency to dull tools and crack.
No matter what species of hardwood flooring you purchase you will have to take precautions in order to take care of it. This is true more of domestic woods like Red Oak, which lies toward the bottom of the Janka scale. Domestic woods still make beautiful flooring pieces in your home and you owe it to yourself to look into them when shopping for local, or at least domestic, flooring.
